Workshop on Joint Investigation Teams

The objective of this workshop held on 23April 2018 in cooperation with the SANCAS Project, was to provide a legal overview on the establishment of Joint Investigative Teams (JITs) between countries, their competence and functioning as well as to increase the knowledge and common understanding of prosecutors and judicial police officers on the opportunities and advantages offered by JITs.

Welcoming remarks by Head of Serious Crimes Prosecution office and Director of Criminal Police, were followed by a presentation on the legal framework on JITs by Prosecutor LTE Carmine Pirozzoli, who encouraged the 31 prosecutors and Judicial Police officers who attended the workshop to make use of this international cooperation tool which provides for a quick exchange of information, while bypassing the usual and time-consuming communication through rogatory letters.

The successful work of a joint investigative team between Albania and Italy finalized in March 2018 with arrests in both countries, was presented by Italian and Albanian Prosecutors and Judicial Police officers who were part of this JIT.

Team Leaders of SANCAS and IPA 2017 Project on Countering Serious Crime in the Western Balkans expressed their support to the Albanian participants and explained that operational meetings between members of JITs of 2 countries could be financed through these Projects.
